Planning a Boho wedding in Devon, Cornwall or Somerset? You’re in good company!
Boho is still a strong influence in both the fashion and wedding worlds, and gaining pace this year. Brides are less concerned with rustic, and turning towards luxe and bling, which sit alongside the eclectic and shabby chic details perfectly.

What does ‘Boho’ mean?
‘Boho’ is an abbreviation for Bohemian, a term that was first used in the late 19th century to describe those living alternative and often gypsy or very ‘arty’ lives – and the origins of the decline of the corset allowing women more movement. This is fundamentally the basis of Boho: a fluid line, relaxed vibe, appreciation for nature and vibrant colours.

A Boho wedding
Inspired by the past, and with the addition of a modern twist, today’s brides and grooms are increasingly shunning formal ceremonies and opting for weddings that are guest-focused.

But being less formal and less restricted by some of the traditional wedding elements does not mean you have to have a wedding that is too rustic. Boho is more about the way in which the day unfolds – it’s an attitude and can be achieved with a low-key but high-quality, approach keeping things effortlessly simple and with a focus on great food and entertainment.

The day sets its own pace, with chill out zones, comfy sofas, mood lighting, yurts as bars, wigwams and pop up hotels decked out with high end furnishings for accommodation. Look at suppliers like the Very Vintage Hire CompanyVirginias Vintage and The Pop Up Hotel to bring an oasis of calm with quirky elements, or to zone areas of your reception.

Boho wedding dresses
When you think Boho wedding dresses think soft and unstructured with vintage elements, such as lace or bias cut silks and satins. A pillar silhouette and understated elegance is perfect with a pair of high strappy sandals – or even barefoot, depending on your own style. Days of Grace and Donna Flower Vintage offer a treasure trove of vintage and unique pieces to fall in love with.

Boho wedding makeup and accessories
Becoming an ethereal Boho bride means being fresh faced, but with a heavier eye and some metallic touches. Jewelry and accessories can be experimental, with turquoise stones and long chains in delicate gold teamed with vintage headwear, or for the more adventurous try a feather headdress to bring in a little festival vibe –  another hot trend this year! Good accessories suppliers include Kye Tew Jewellery and Feathered Fantasy.

Boho grooms
Grooms tend to be in favor of the “Bo Ho” style wedding as it allows more freedom in the choices of food, entertainment and clothing! We’re seeing more and more grooms and groomsmen dressing to impress in individual suits, brogues, separate jackets and trousers and unique buttonholes, ties and accessories. Samuel Dawe & Co, a family run business, offers an endless supply of everything a man could wish for, and vintage and retro suppliers can hold a wealth of opportunities for the dapper chap.

Boho wedding venues
Venues can be Boho-styled with heavenly table dressings. Choose simple mismatched glassware and sequined tablecloths with hues of greys, turquoise and navy, topped off with fairy lights and candelabras, which create a striking look (see our wedding styling items for hire).

But perhaps the perfect location for a Boho wedding is under canvas (see our vintage-style marquees for hire). Opt for decadent linings or keep it simple and let the details of the traditional marquee create the perfect backdrop for your day. We can offer top hat sections, entrance areas and bars, and in good weather the marquees offer an open feature that allows you to take in the stunning surroundings of your off-the-beaten-track wedding. Check out our traditional marquees and other options, such as tipis from World Inspired Tents for under-canvas ideas. Fire pits and sunsets are perfect to ease you into the nighttime proceedings where the lighting comes into its own against the night sky.

Boho wedding catering
This is where you can have some fun, with vintage catering vans offering high end but laid-back food and drink choices. How about wood fired pizzas from proper pizza ovens, or huge pans of paella, from caterers such as H&A Catering, or a pop up bar with barista coffee too from Camper Coffee Co?

Boho wedding flowers
Flowers are a key element to the iconic Boho wedding look. Centrepieces run along the tables often tumbling down over the edges again with a lot of greenery used such as eucalyptus give a feel that is completely informal.

And when it comes to the bride, try a heavy flower crown teamed with tumbling loose curls, and an oversized cascading bouquet containing more greenery than traditional bouquets. Portaes, a South African flower, are a key trend currently, or opt for big, bold, blousy blooms arranged in unstructured hand tied posies with long ribbons that fall to the floor. Consider using suppliers such as Offshore Blooms or Phillip Taylor Corps.
